#029: Leaders Shouldn’t Be Outshined By Their Followers

Talent should never have a standard, only a minimum.

Average or underperforming managers often fear hiring somebody who will outshine them, because they don’t want to hire themselves out of a job.

Taryn is the Executive Search Consultant for Talent War Group. Prior to joining TWG, Taryn served six years in the US Navy as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer, only the 33rd female to ever join this elite group. She attended Fleet Replacement Squadron, HSC-3 in Coronado, CA then being assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 21. In 2014, she deployed on the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) participating in RIMPAC where she received her MH-60S Crew Chief qualification.

Taryn volunteered for deployment on the USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) for Pacific Partnership 2015, flying over 200 hours as Crew Chief and executing rescues, and ultimately being a key part of her crew being awarded “Aircrew of the Year.” Taryn was Training LPO at home guard overseeing teaching, aircrew curriculum as well as creating syllabi including classroom lectures on inflight procedures, CRM and Search And Rescue procedures.

Qualifying crewman as Crew Chief, Taryn was known for her unique ability in the selection and identification, and assessment of candidates. Ultimately, Taryn personally coached, mentored and trained 100s to excel in the most extreme and difficult environments. Taryn’s passion, drive and commitment to identifying and developing talent is an invaluable asset to the mission of Talent War Group.

Joe Barnard

Joe had a 33 year Air Force career serving as both an enlisted Pararescueman and Combat Rescue Officer, commanding three times before retiring in 2016 as a Lt Col. Taking a year off to decompress by skydiving and going on a few surf trips to Costa Rica, Joe and his wife Meghan also traveled Southeast Asia for 6 months hanging out in pool villas, eating local food and doing yoga. Later, Joe was COO of a wireless construction company for 18 months. Underwhelmed and searching for more of a sense of service, he landed a role as Exec Dir of a Residential Treatment Center for teen boys in Benton, TN.

Mike Sarraille is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer and a former enlisted Recon Marine and Scout-Sniper. A graduate of the University of Texas McCombs Business School, he is the founder and CEO of Talent War Group, a specialized executive search firm, and talent advisory that finds high-performing business leaders for senior, executive, or other critical leadership positions. He is co-author of ‘The Talent War: How Special Operations and Great Organizations Win on Talent’ and a columnist for Men’s Journal and Men’s Fitness under ‘The Everyday Warrior’ column. He founded and served as a board of directors for the VETTED Foundation, a cutting-edge executive-level transition program.

Mike enlisted in the Marine Corps and later became a Recon Marine and also served as a scout sniper. He was selected for a Marine officer program, but after finishing his bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University, he sought a commission in the Navy to try out for the SEAL Teams.  He is also a recognized keynote speaker and subject matter expert in leadership development, talent acquisition, and talent management.

Joseph is a lifelong problem-solver committed to building the teams needed to take on our toughest challenges. In addition, he is a technology entrepreneur and expert in transportation, smart cities, urban mobility, energy, national security issues as well as an Army combat veteran.  Currently, he serves as a Special Advisor for Military Leadership and Strategy Policy at the University of Texas.  As well as co-founder, he is President of Grayline where he works with people and companies to bring together experts, data, and solutions to help companies and public institutions manage disruptive change. He is a graduate of West Point with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and also received a Masters from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2002. In 2013, he was recognized as a White House Champion of Change for his efforts in Energy and Transportation. Joseph and his wife of 26 years, Amy, live in Austin and have three adult daughters.
