This is a story of courage, determination, longevity and chasing your dreams. Laura Wilkinson, Creator & Host of the Pursuit of Gold Podcast, won the Olympic Gold Medal in Women’s 10 Meter Platform Diving with a broken foot. She then became the first woman in history to win Olympic Gold, World Cup Gold and the World Championships. She has appeared in three Olympic games, and at the age of 43 is competing to earn a spot on a fourth team in 2021.
Laura has worked for, and earned, her success from the start. Originally a gymnast, she was cut by her high school team and was told she was “worthless” as a diver. She committed herself to the journey at that very moment, facing fear, the unknown, and failure along the way. Just prior to the 2000 Olympic Games, Laura broke her foot in training leaving a bone spur on the ball of her foot. She used visualization and a relentless focus on her dream to make the team to train and prepare without actually diving. In unwavering pain, she not only qualified for the team, but won gold in a come-from-behind victory she shares on the show.Every time I fail, it gives me the opportunity to learn. Click To Tweet
In this episode designed for any anyone willing to put the work in, never quit, and do the fundamentals better than everyone else, Laura explains how she views and overcomes fear in her performance, competition and everyday life. She candidly shares stories of her failure and how she has learned to be better because of them. And she teaches us all that with age comes experience, but our childhood dreams will always push us further than we believe we will go.
